Adventure rider guide
Navigation, bike choice, borders and practical preparation—explained for riders who would rather be on the trail.
What is a GPX file?
A GPX file is a universal file containing a line of GPS points, and sometimes waypoints. DBA supplies a track to follow rather than a recalculated road route. Keep the original line visible and do not allow your device to replace it with the fastest road route.
When will I receive the event tracks?
Event files unlock in your member area on the published release date and only after full payment is confirmed. This protects negotiated access and prevents unapproved sharing. Download and test the files before leaving home.
How do I load a track onto a Garmin eTrex 22x or 32x?
Connect the eTrex to a computer with USB, open it as a portable drive, copy the supplied .gpx file into the Garmin/GPX folder, safely eject the device, then open Track Manager, select the track, choose View Map and Go. Carry spare AA batteries and confirm the full track displays before the event.
Can I use a Garmin zūmo, Montana or another motorcycle GPS?
Yes. A Garmin zūmo XT or XT2, Montana 700 series, eTrex 22x/32x and similar devices that display imported GPX tracks are suitable. Transfer methods vary by model, so use Garmin Explore, BaseCamp or direct USB transfer as supported by your unit. Switch off automatic route recalculation when you need to remain on the supplied off-road track.
Can I navigate with OsmAnd on my phone?
Yes. Download the required regional maps for offline use first. Open the supplied GPX file in OsmAnd, or import it through My Places → Tracks, make the track visible, then select Navigation → Settings → Follow track. Use the original track for off-road sections rather than snapping it to roads. Test the phone mount, charging and screen visibility before the ride.
What navigation backup should I carry?
Carry the GPX on a second device or phone, offline maps, a charging lead or power bank and the event emergency numbers. A waterproof, vibration-resistant mount is essential. Never depend on mobile signal in remote riding areas.
Which adventure motorcycles are suitable?
DBA welcomes all brands. Popular choices include the Yamaha Ténéré 700, KTM 790/890 Adventure, Aprilia Tuareg 660, Honda Africa Twin, BMW F 800/850/900 GS, Triumph Tiger 900, Ducati DesertX and Suzuki V-Strom 800DE. Smaller road-legal dual-sport motorcycles can be excellent too. The right bike is the one you can control confidently, with suitable tyres, range and mechanical preparation for the selected route.
Can I ride a large 1200 cc or 1300 cc adventure bike?
Yes, if your experience matches the route and you are comfortable managing its weight on loose climbs, sand, mud and rocky descents. Choose the Green route when conditions or experience call for it. Tyre choice and rider skill matter more than the badge on the tank.
How do Green, Red and Black routes differ?
Green is the most accessible option and suits riders building off-road confidence. Red adds more technical terrain and requires sound gravel and trail skills. Black is for experienced riders comfortable with demanding terrain. Conditions can change quickly, so the event briefing and organiser guidance always take priority.
What should I carry on the bike?
Carry at least 2 litres of water, personal medication, sun protection, basic first aid, a puncture repair solution suitable for your tubes or tubeless tyres, inflation equipment, basic tools and a recovery strap within your group. Wear a certified helmet, proper boots, gloves and protective riding kit.
Do South African riders need a passport for Eswatini?
Yes. A South African ID is not enough for an international land border. Carry a valid passport. Eswatini tourism guidance says the passport should remain valid for at least three months after the travel dates, and South African tourists normally do not require a visa for a short visit. Border rules can change, so confirm the current event pack and official guidance before departure.
What motorcycle documents are needed for Eswatini?
Carry your valid driving licence and the motorcycle registration document. If the bike is financed, obtain a bank cross-border authority letter. For a company, rented or borrowed bike, carry the owner or company authority and any supporting documents. Budget for the current Eswatini road levy; the official tourism site currently lists E80 for a foreign-registered motorcycle, but fees may change.
Are pillions welcome?
Yes, where an event package provides for them. A pillion or non-riding partner requires a separate adult entry because accommodation, meals and event services are priced per person.
Is a DBA event a race?
No. DBA events are organised adventure rides built around the route, the landscape and the people. Ride within your ability, respect communities and landowners, and arrive with enough energy to enjoy the evening.
